I personally think the theme is Others beliefs versus your beliefs
I think this because in the book there were a lot of references towards Matt. The compared him to an animal, called him filthy and other nasty words. Now there was one character in particular who didn't believe that. Her name was Maria. Maria believed Matt was a human. Even though they created him by cloning and he was born in a cow, she believed he is still a human. Here is a quote from page 222 from Maria.
"I love you," Matt said. "
I love you, too," Maria replied. "I know that's a sin, and I'll probably go to hell for it."
If I have a soul, I'll go with you," promised Matt.
She believes that Matt has a soul unlike others. She did not let other decide her beliefs and neither did Celia and Tam Lin. This can be put into our world too. I think that a lot of beliefs that have been present or are right now are decided by society. How did racism start? What about sexism? They all started from a single person or a small group and later on spread around the whole world. The people it spread too let others decide on their beliefs and unfortunately it still carries on today, not as much, but it still carries on. If we did not let others decide our beliefs think about how the world would be today.
These are the reasons of why I chose the theme Others beliefs versus yours as the theme. Thank you for reading my third blog entry about theme in the novel The House of the Scorpion thank you for reading. My next posts will be coming soon.
